2022’s running of the Chicago Yacht Club’s Race to Mackinac was one for the history books as a string of strong storms punched the racing and cruising divisions from Saturday evening through Sunday morning. Winds shifted dramatically from south to north for those in the racing divisions. The cruising fleet got a big push up the lake.
The conditions tested pre-race planning, safety preparation, and sailors’ nerves. By the end of the first evening, there were reports of blown-up main sails, exploded spinnakers, and broken equipment, but no serious injuries.
CYC's Adam Collins leads this reflection on the experience, featuring racers who competed as well as a look at the tactics they employed. They'll also share how they faired at this new seminar!
